CHAPTER III: THE HARMS (MAFASID) OF THE BA'ALWI CLAIMING DESCENDANCY FROM THE PROPHET
Hanif Alatas et al. formulated a title regarding the mafasid (harmful consequences) of the author’s research concerning the invalidation of the Ba'Alwi lineage:
Trapped in Tha'n fi al-Nasab (Defaming Lineage)
According to Hanif, researching the lineage of the Ba'Alwi—who claim to be
descendants of the Prophet Muhammad SAW—constitutes defaming lineage. Hanif
fails to realize that safeguarding the lineage of the Prophet Muhammad SAW
from impostors is an obligation. If we discover that the Ba'Alwi are not
descendants of the Prophet, it is mandatory for us to convey this to the
Ummah.
An example of tha'n al-nasab (defaming lineage) would be
saying, "Such-and-such a tribe is descended from slaves," or something
similar. Conversely, exposing those who claim descendancy from the Prophet
when they are actually not is an act of amr ma'ruf and nahiy munkar (enjoining
good and forbidding evil).
Pitting Kiais, Habaib, and the Ummah Against One Another
Hanif et al. assert that exposing the falsity of the Ba'Alwi lineage pits Kiais, Habaib, and the Ummah against each other. This is certainly mistaken. The truth is that it rescues the Ummah from the various forms of arrogance displayed by the Ba'Alwi, who claim descendancy from the Prophet despite it being scientifically unproven
Opening the Door to Istihza (Derision) Toward Scholars and Saints
Hanif claims that the research into the Ba'Alwi lineage opens the door to istihza (derision/belittling) toward scholars (ulama) and saints (awliya). This statement is entirely erroneous. It is actually the Ba'Alwi who belittle the scholars by asserting things such as: an ignorant Ba'Alwi is more noble than 70 learned Kiais; or the sandals of a sinning, drug-addicted Ba'Alwi are more noble than the turban of a Kiai, and so forth.
Spreading Racial Hatred Within the Ummah
Hanif et al. state that the Ba'Alwi research spreads racial hatred among the Ummah. In reality, the reverse is true; it is the Ba'Alwi who have been acting racially all this time by considering their clan to be of a higher status than the indigenous population (pribumi), leading them to believe that it is strictly forbidden (haram) for an indigenous man to marry a Ba'Alwi woman.
Weakening the Integrity and Scholarship of NU Scholars
Hanif claims that the research into the Ba'Alwi lineage weakens the integrity
and scholarship of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) scholars. On the contrary, this
research conducted by the author—who is an NU member—which concludes that the
Ba'Alwi are proven not to be descendants of the Prophet Muhammad SAW,
demonstrates that NU scholarship remains continuous from the past down to the
present day and for the future.
Furthermore, what has actually been
weakening the integrity of NU scholars all this time is mostly the Ba'Alwi
themselves, who boldly criticize the outcomes of NU Congresses (Muktamar),
such as the concepts of "Islam Nusantara," the use of the term "Non-Muslim"
for disbelievers, and so forth.
CONCLUSION
May this book of refutations against Hanif Alatas and companions
be of benefit. Amen.
