FOREWORD BY KH IMADUDDIN UTSMAN AL-BANTANI
The book currently in the reader's hands is a review of the genealogical texts
that the author utilized as references in researching the Ba'alwi lineage. By
examining the chronicle of genealogy books spanning from the 3rd century
Hijriah down to the 13th century Hijriah, we arrive at the conclusion that the
Ba'alwi lineage—which enjoys such immense popularity today—is completely left
in pitch darkness by the writings of expert genealogists. Out of 18 genealogy
books lined up from the 3rd to the 13th centuries Hijriah, only two texts
record the Ba'alwi lineage. Even then, this only begins in the 10th century
Hijriah, accompanied by the author's own admission that the Ba'alwi lineage
was inserted into his book without any reference to preceding genealogy
texts.
From the research conducted on these genealogy books, it is
proven that the Ba'alwi lineage is a grafted lineage (nasab cangkokan) that
abruptly emerged claiming descent from the Prophet Muhammad SAW 651 years
after the passing of Ahmad bin Isa.
According to expert
genealogists, to verify a lineage, the references that can be relied upon must
be books written specifically for the purpose of lineage verification (itsbat
nasab)—namely, dedicated genealogy books. Conversely, information originating
from texts outside of genealogy books, such as history books, Sufism books,
and the like, cannot be utilized as tools for lineage verification.
Nonetheless, in a subsequent book, Insha Allah, the author will construct a
chronicle detailing how the Ba'alwi family name first surfaced in history
books; and how the Ba'alwi family inoculated themselves into the family of
Ahmad bin Isa across various texts starting from the 9th century Hijriah,
which are fraught with inconsistencies and contradictions with one another.
May
this book prove beneficial to us all.
